Director of the Mycology Reference Centre at the University Hospital of South Manchester and an honorary Professor of Medical Mycology at the University of Manchester. Prior to these positions he was an Associate Professor in Medical Mycology at the University of Helsinki, Finland, with an affiliate appointment at the Helsinki University Central Hospital. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and of the Society of Biology. His clinical and laboratory investigations have focused on the pathogenicity, diagnosis and epidemiology of superficial and systemic fungal infections. More recently he has applied his diagnostic experience to investigating the role of moulds in “sick building syndrome”.
He has published over 370 original articles, book chapters and reviews and is the author or editor of fifteen mycological textbooks and handbooks, including Fungal Infection: Diagnosis and Management, 4th Edition (2012), The Pocket Guide to Fungal infection, 2nd Edition (2006), Therapeutic Guidelines in Systemic Fungal Infection, 4th Edition (2007), and Fungal Infection and Critical Care Medicine (2008). Malcolm Richardson is a frequent speaker and session chair at major international conferences in the fields of clinical microbiology, infectious diseases, and medical mycology. His professional duties include being the Editor-in-Chief of Critical Reviews in Microbiology (2013 impact factor: 6.087, Microbiology journal group ranking: 14/119 , an Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, a Member of the Editorial Board of Current Fungal Infection Reports, a member of the APMIS International Board of Co-Editors. Currently, he is President-Elect of the International Society of Human and Animal Mycology, and he will assume his role as President in May 2015. Malcolm Richardson acts as a consultant for the European Food Safety Authority and the World Health Authority. In 2013, Malcolm Richardson has become the President of the UK's Institute of Specialist Surveyors and Engineers.
